Jonesboro, AR – (Contributed) – Arkansas State University and head volleyball coach Brian Gerwig reached a new agreement that extends his contract to July 1, 2029, Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics Chris Pezman announced Wednesday.

“Our volleyball program has thrived under Coach Gerwig’s leadership, and we are eager to build on that momentum moving forward,” Pezman said. “Brian’s vision and dedication to both the athletic and academic success of our student-athletes will allow this program to continue to excel and compete at a high level.”

The 2024 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year produced the second-largest turnaround over a head coach’s first three seasons in program history, improving A-State’s record from 9-22 in 2022 to 28-6 in 2024. He led the Red Wolves to their first postseason appearance since 2018 with back-to-back trips to the NIVC in 2023 and 2024.

“A proven leader, winner, and coach, Brian has guided our program with excellence, and we are thrilled to announce this contract extension as he builds on that success,” said Arkansas State Chancellor Dr. Todd Shields. “The outstanding job Coach Gerwig has done with this program is recognized on our campus, across the state and nationally.”

Last season, A-State appeared in the NIVC Great 8 for the first time since 1993 after defeating UTRGV in Jonesboro and Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, TX. The Scarlet and Black clinched the first SBC regular-season title in nine seasons and the most wins in a single season since 2015.

Gerwig coached the program’s first SBC Defensive Player of the Year since 2016 and the first SBC Newcomer of the Year since 1997 in Daedrianna Cail.

“I want to thank Chris Pezman, Dr. Todd Shields, and Amy Holt for their continued support and belief in my vision for Arkansas State Volleyball,” Gerwig said. “I’m grateful to my staff for their dedication and to the athletes and families who trust us. I’m lucky to be surrounded by amazing people—there’s no place I’d rather be.”

In his fourth season at the helm, A-State holds a 13-6 (6-2 SBC) record that includes the program’s first victory over a nationally ranked opponent. The Red Wolves defeated No. 16 Missouri in a 3-2 (24-26, 25-16, 19-25, 25-22, 15-11) decision on Sept. 4 inside First National Bank Arena.

Gerwig was announced as the ninth A-State women’s volleyball head coach on March 15, 2022.
