A-State men & women record top 5 finishes at SBC Cross Country Championships

Jonesboro, AR – (Contributed) – Arkansas State cross country produced an individual champion at the Sun Belt Cross Country Championships for the second consecutive season, and both teams finished inside the top five on Friday morning at the Graham Creek Nature Preserve in Foley, AL.

Carlo Martinez-Jaramillo highlighted the Red Wolves’ performance by becoming the 10th individual conference champion in program history and eighth for the men’s team. A-State has produced a conference champion in back-to-back seasons for the first time since Steve Wilson secured consecutive titles in 1980-81.

The women’s team opened the day with a 5K, finishing fifth with 104 total points. Five Red Wolves posted career bests, starting with a time of 17:37.7 from Erika Kreuger to secure a ninth-place finish. Mary Beth Bailey (17:52.4) finished nine spots behind at 18th while Devyn O’ Daniel (17:56.7) placed 22nd.

Gracie Jacobs posted a time of 18:03.2 to finish 26th, and Sophey Pope rounded out the top five finishers at 29th place after crossing the finish line at the 18:06.5 mark.

The men’s team followed with an 8K, posting 83 points to finish second. Martinez-Jaramillo trailed by 15 seconds at the final checkpoint, but managed to close the gap and secure first place after crossing the finish line with 24:04.41 on the clock. The junior won the event by two-tenths of a second, as ULM runner Kgaogelo Moloisi clocked in at 24:04.62.

Noah Herrera (24:41.40) placed 13th and Joe Edwards (24:44.88) claimed the next spot while Parker Noffz (25:08.44) finished 23rd and Avinash Patel (25:25.35) took 34th place.
