Jonesboro, AR – Contributed – Bradbury Art Museum (BAM) at Arkansas State University presents more-than-human, an international exhibition of immersive and interactive media art, now on view through Oct. 10.

The exhibition and a reception 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, will also launch BAM’s 2026–27 NEA Big Read, centered on Joy Harjo’s “An American Sunrise.” Admission is free.

Jane Tingley, an artist, curator, and chair of computational arts at York University in Toronto, curated more-than-human. The exhibition brings together artists who explore intersections among art, science, Indigenous worldviews and the natural world.

The artists challenge the assumption that humans stand at the center of the natural world, through video, immersive projection, sound, scent and scientific data.

more-than-human asks us to reconsider some very basic assumptions about our place in the world,” said Julia Wintner, director of the Bradbury Art Museum. “These questions feel particularly meaningful in Northeast Arkansas, a region shaped by agriculture, environmental change, and close relationships among people, land and community.”

The exhibition invites audiences to encounter forests, plants, water, microorganisms, fungi and atmospheric systems as participants in complex networks of relationships. Artists use technology to make audible phenomena that normally exist beyond the limits of human perception.

Tingley added, “I’m excited to share the artists’ ideas with audiences beyond the communities where the exhibition was first conceived. BAM offers a wonderful setting for these works, and it is a privilege to bring the exhibition to such a beautiful museum and to engage with audiences in Northeast Arkansas.”

The exhibition features work by Ursula Biemann, Marko Cindric, Lindsey french, Dolleen Tisawii’ashii Manning + Mary Bunch, Suzanne Morrissette, François Quévillon, Rasa Smite & Raitis Smits, and Jane Tingley with Hrysovalanti Maheras and Ilze Briede [Kavi].

more-than-human also provides a meaningful setting for the launch of BAM’s NEA Big Read and its year-long exploration of Harjo’s work.

A reception at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, for more-than-human will serve as the kickoff for BAM’s NEA Big Read, beginning a year of exhibitions, readings, conversations and community programs. Copies of Harjo’s book are being made available for use in numerous classes at A-State this fall.

Harjo’s writing asks readers to consider relationships among people, land, memory, history, and the more-than-human world.

The exhibition approaches many of these questions through visual and sensory experiences, creating opportunities for visitors to explore ideas that will continue through Big Read conversations, readings, educational programs and community activities throughout the academic year.

Throughout more-than-human, visitors can slow down, listen, sense and reconsider their own place within interconnected living systems. The works raise fundamental questions about what it means to be alive, to possess agency, and to communicate with beings and systems that experience the world through forms of perception and scales of time different from our own.

Bradbury Art Museum is open 12-5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. For more details, one may contact BAM in the Fowler Center, located at 201 Olympic Drive, or call (870) 972-3687
