Jonesboro, AR – Jonesboro Right Now – Justices of the Craighead County Quorum Court approved a weight limit ordinance for a county road Monday night.

The ordinance establishes weight limits on County Road 780, limiting vehicle weights to 15 tons. Signage informing motorists of the weight limit will be installed. Those found guilty of violating the ordinance would face a misdemeanor charge, be fined no less than $100 and $100 in court costs and would face civil penalties.

Any money collected from this ordinance as the result of fines or payment of damages will be appropriated to the county’s road fund.

The ordinance came as several members of the public had spoken out against a proposed gravel mining pit project near Highway 141 at several previous quorum court meetings.

JRN previously confirmed that the Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment’s Mining Program had issued an open-cut mining pit permit on Aug. 20 to Shannon Kee Construction, LLC, which aims to install the pit.

During the previous meeting in August, justices of the peace voted to read the ordinance a first and second time. Ordinances are required to be read three times before the quorum court votes on final action.

At this meeting, justices voted to read the ordinance by title only. There was no discussion by quorum court members, nor input from members of the public in attendance. The ordinance passed 11-2, with Justices of the Peace Darrel Cook and Garrett Barnes voting “no.”

In other business, the court received its 2025 legislative audit report. Craighead County Judge Marvin Day said, “we have had a very successful legislative audit,” with no findings of significant risks. The court unanimously acknowledged receipt of the audit, which it must do due to state statutes.

The next quorum court meeting is scheduled for Sept. 28 at 5:30 p.m.
