Craighead County, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – Craighead County has been placed under a winter storm warning that becomes effective Friday.

The warning takes effect at 6 p.m. on Friday and remains in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday. The National Weather Service predicted heavy mixed precipitation, with total snow and sleet accumulations expected to range between six and nine inches. Ice accumulations of less than a quarter of an inch are forecasted.

In Jonesboro, the NWS said Friday will be partly sunny, with temperatures dipping down to 26°F by 5 p.m. Chances for winter weather increase heading into Friday night and Saturday, with a high temperature of 17°F and a low of 11°F. There is a 100 percent chance of wintry precipitation on Saturday.

Temperatures stay below freezing going into next week, with Monday, Jan. 26, forecasted to be sunny with a high of 17°F.

The NWS added that power outages and tree damage are likely due to ice, and that travel could be “impossible.” Hazardous conditions could affect the Friday evening commute, the agency said.

“If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” the NWS said.

Warming Shelters:

The City of Jonesboro will be offering daytime warming shelters throughout the city. A full list of the city’s shelter locations and hours is below.

  • Allen Park Community Center (3609 Race St.)
    • Monday through Friday, 3:30 to 9 p.m., and on Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m.
  • Earl Bell Community Center (1212 S. Church St.)
    • Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m.
  • Jonesboro Youth Community Center (1421 W. Nettleton Ave.)
    • Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m.
  • Parker Park Community Center (1506 N. Church St.)
    • Monday through Friday 3:30 to 9 p.m., and on Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m.

In addition, the Salvation Army of Jonesboro will be offering an overnight warming shelter that includes two meals a day. Check in is at 4 p.m., and checkout is at 8 a.m. The Salvation Army is located at 800 Cate Ave.

JET buses and trollies will provide free transportation to and from all warming shelters.
