Craighead County, AR – Jonesboro Right Now – Deputies arrested an Egypt man after they said he intentionally rammed his pickup truck into his partner’s car during a chase.

District Judge Tommy Fowler found probable cause Sept. 9 to charge 51-year-old Calvin Wayne Simmons with aggravated assault on a family or household member, a Class D felony, and reckless driving, a Class C misdemeanor.

The charges stem from a two-vehicle crash near County Roads 191 and 192 on Sept. 8. According to the probable cause affidavit, a witness called dispatch after pulling up to the crash site and seeing the involved parties arguing.

Upon arrival, deputies found a green Dodge Dakota pickup truck backed into a bean field with severe front-end damage. Ahead of it, a silver passenger car sat in a ditch with trunk damage. EMS were on scene treating the female victim.

According to the affidavit, deputies suspected the crash was intentional after observing the scene and speaking with witnesses. They detained Simmons, who was walking toward them from the truck. When asked what happened, Simmons reportedly told deputies, “I was trying to catch her” and “I hit her”.

The victim said she was in a relationship with Simmons and had left his home following an argument. She said he chased her in his vehicle, and when she slowed on County Road 191 to approach a semi-truck, Simmons rear-ended her car.

The driver of the semi-truck confirmed seeing the silver car approaching in his rearview mirror. Moments later, he looked back to find the car off the roadway and the Dodge parked in the street. The driver noted that the man and woman then exited their vehicles and began yelling at each other.

Simmons is being held on a $25,000 bond and was issued a no-contact order. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 30.
