Jonesboro, AR – (Contributed) – The eighth annual Living Legends Awards will be presented Saturday, Feb. 28, at Arkansas State University.

This awards event began in 2019 and over the past several years, more than 30 individuals have been honored.

Nominations for the awards are now open. The theme of the event is “A Century of Black History Commemorations: Celebrate. Educate. Elevate.”

“The prestige of this award is that it is community-nominated and not just selected from those here at A-State,” said Ian Buchanan, chair of the Living Legends Awards committee.

This event, held during Black History Month, calls on members of the public to nominate individuals whose lives, leadership and legacy have made a lasting impact on the A-State campus and surrounding community.

Buchanan said there are many reasons one may make a nomination.

“You should nominate because you have the history and stories of the person you wish to nominate. Having a connection and sharing the impact that the nominee has had from personal experience is always beneficial.”

A myriad of recipients have been honored over the years in the categories of living legend and legacy award winners. This year, a new category will be added to honor those who celebrate, educate and elevate the community by way of a dynamic new leader award.

“Each year, this program serves as a powerful reminder of the excellence, sacrifice and service that continues to shape our shared history,” Buchanan continued.

Nominations close on Friday, Jan. 23. One may make a nomination through this link.

The award ceremony will be held at Centennial Hall of Reng Student Union from 5 – 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28. Attendance is free, but seating is limited. To reserve a spot, Buchanan said attendees can become a sponsor of the event.

One may direct any questions regarding the event or sponsorship inquiries to ibuchanan@astate.edu.
