Jonesboro, AR – JonesboroRightNow.com – The members of Oak Grove Extension Homemakers Club surprised the NEA Breast Cancer Support Group with 25 handmade pillows.

The pillows, made by members of the club, are intended for post-surgery use. Club members made two types of pillows: 12 of the pillows have removable pillowcases for easy laundering, and 13 are designed to go underneath seatbelts. The pillows were presented to the NEA Breast Cancer Support Group at Fat City Grill.

“We have one person in our group that’s a member [of the NEA Breast Cancer Support Group], and she had talked with the president about us coming, and so it was a surprise for the other members. They were so excited. They were going through the box before we could take the pictures, saying, ‘Oh, I want this one,'” said Oak Grove Extension Homemakers Club secretary Debbie DeRossitte. “They were really excited about that, and especially excited about the ones that would kind of pad seatbelts, because that’s a real issue if you have a tender spot.”

The pillows were the group’s community charity project for the month. Each month, the club meets to make various handmade items for different charitable organizations, such as dolls for children undergoing medical procedures at Arkansas Children’s Hospital or dog beds for the Northeast Arkansas Humane Society.

All members of the group participate in making the pillows, assembly-line style. One member would work on sewing them, and then pass the pillow to another member, who would stuff it, all while another person works on pillowcases.

DeRossitte said having community projects like the pillowcases shows community members there are people who care.

“We do things that money can’t buy, and it is so good for the community to be able to see that there are people out there that care,” she said. “With the pillows, it’s like a hug. You’re having a bad day, and you got something that [shows] somebody that you did not even know cared enough about you to do that for you.”

The Oak Grove Extension Homemakers Club teaches its members about various aspects of homemaking and hosts community projects. Those interested in joining can call (870) 933-4565 for more information.
