Craighead County, AR – Jonesboro Right Now – Emergency crews in Craighead County have officially transitioned to a recovery effort for a juvenile who was last seen going underwater and did not resurface.

Jason Allen, assistant chief for the Craighead County Sheriff’s Office, told JRN that the initial call came at 6:25 p.m. July 17 that a minor had gone under at the Iron Bridge Access on the St. Francis River off Highway 69 located between Lake City and Trumann.

Responders searched the area last night until darkness made conditions unsafe for volunteers. Crews reconvened this morning at 6:30 a.m., using divers in the water alongside live-scope sonar technology. As of 11:12 a.m., when JRN’s conversation with Allen took place, the child has not been located.

The Craighead County Sheriff’s Office is currently being assisted in the recovery effort by Arkansas Game and Fish, the Trumann Fire Department, and the Lake City Fire Department.

Allen said that while the main road in the area remains open, the boat ramp and river access are currently closed to the public.

This is a developing story. JRN will provide updates as they are available.
