Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – Dec. 27, 2024 – Just what is periodontitis? Higginbotham Family Dental breaks down what this disease is and how you can prevent it.

Periodontitis, also known as gum disease, is a serious infection that if left untreated, can cause serious damage to your mouth. In addition to damaging your gums, it also affects the bone supporting your teeth, which can cause them to loosen and even fall out.

While this is a common infection, it is easily preventable by brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing once per day. Be sure to get regular dental checkups as well.

If you think you might have periodontitis, here are some common symptoms:

  • Swollen or puffy gums
  • Bright red, dark red, or purple gums
  • Gums bleed easily
  • Spitting out blood when brushing or flossing
  • Your toothbrush looks pink after you brush
  • Painful chewing
  • Receding gums
  • Loose teeth

Periodontitis generally starts with plaque buildup on your teeth. Plaque is a sticky film made of bacteria. The best way to prevent significant plaque buildup is to regularly brush and floss your teeth, but it quickly comes back. This is why it is important to schedule regular dental appointments to ensure professional removal of plaque.

There are a few factors that can increase your risk for periodontitis:

  • Gingivitis
  • Poor oral hygiene habits
  • Smoking or chewing tobacco
  • Poor nutrition, including low vitamin C level
  • Certain diseases like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease
  • Certain medicines that cause gum changes or dry mouth

The best way to prevent periodontitis is making sure you stay on top of your oral hygiene. This includes regular brushing and flossing, as well as scheduling dental appointments every six months. You should brush your teeth for at least two minutes each time.
