I remember as a young man growing up in Helena, Arkansas often traveling to the big city of Memphis. Like Memphis, Helena sat on the muddy Mississippi River surrounded by cotton fields and the music of Elvis Presley. On August 16th, 1977 the news broke that Elvis had died. My parents were actually in Memphis that day when an ambulance went screaming by their car. A little later they heard the announcement on local radio that Elvis had died. They always felt like they had witnessed the ambulance taking Elvis to the hospital. A few days later, my parents and I returned to Memphis to do some shopping at the area malls. I remember we were sitting on Elvis Presley Boulevard about a block away from Graceland. The traffic had stopped and there were still huge crowds outside Graceland where fans had been grieving. As I sat hanging out the window of our car wondering what was keeping us from getting to the mall, the gates of Graceland opened and many long white limousines began to flow out of the drive onto the Boulevard slowly filing past our vehicle. It was Elvis’ funeral procession. I didn’t think about it at the time but that would be the closest I’d would ever get to The King of Rock-n-Roll. I’ve always wondered which Hollywood stars were sitting behind the darkened windows of the limousines as they rolled past in the lane next to us. Elvis’ death shocked the world. Do you remember where you were when you heard the news? Check out this vintage broadcast of WMC TV 5 in Memphis as they broke the news about the death of Elvis.
